ONCE again, another year has crept up on us again. For some, the stress of what to give at Christmas is a challenging one.
It’s easy to give gift cards, justifying that it’s a practical thing to do or cash in an envelope then ‘they can buy what they want’.
Kids like the money, their eyes light up, are they savers or spenders?
As couples, especially older seniors, money may be a mutually shared commodity in the household, maybe the feeling is that you are only spending the other partner’s money therefore negating the gift.
So, you both agree not to bother and this has gone on for years and gradually you’ve grown out of the Christmas season, it’s a chore and you wish the New Year would arrive soon.
Maybe it’s time to re-invigorate this time for giving and have a heart to heart with your loved one, maybe change your attitude to the festive season.
Why not decide between you, an amount of money to take out of your account and look into buying something really nice that would suit the other, something special, something you really have to spend time and think about what to buy.
Maybe this could be the start of something special both for birthdays as well as Christmas.
After all these years there must be things that your partner likes, even things that may be frivolous to you may not seem that way to your partner. Any way you might score some brownie points.
If it can make them happy, why not! Time is too short and one never knows the length of time we have on this earth or what might happen next.
My previous columns have alluded to my stay in hospital with a broken hip, not in the least was the thought given that your life could be over in an instant.
Without being too dreary about all this, maybe it’s time for a change, this could be a real challenge for some of us.
Are you up for it.
Christmas is just days away now, time to have that heart to heart and try something new. May I take this opportunity to wish readers of this column and especially those residing at Bremer Waters Village, a happy Christmas and New Year and may you find new happiness in 2023.
See you next year!
