I HAVE always been proud to call Australia my home I love this country; I love her beauty and I love the way most of us embrace life.

At this time of the year we reach out to others who are doing it tough and it’s a sad fact that this number is growing.

Charity and church groups send out thousands of hampers and it is timely to say well done to those who dig deep to help them do it.

Last week I joined former mayoral candidate and local councillor David Martin on a Meals on Wheels run and I was reminded of the outstanding work this organisation does.

For many of their 250 daily clients the knock on the door from the Meals on Wheels’ volunteer is one of the few they get.

It is not just the meal that the service provides it is also the message they carry to these residents and that is others care about them.

The photo (above) with today’s column is of some of those who volunteer their time to deliver meals every week. They don’t do it for praise, they do it because they are wonderful people.

They embrace the true Aussie spirit of looking after a mate in need with a smile and a show of kindness.

On behalf of all who live in Ipswich can I wish the Meals on Wheels volunteers and to all others who give their time to assist other charity groups a Merry Christmas, your generosity doesn’t go unnoticed.

You work in silence, but please hear our applause.
