ANYONE that’s lived in our city for any length of time will know our town has a love affair with cars and lapping through the CBD.
Many of us would meet up with mates and drive around in our beat up cars back in the day.
Saturday night, many of the old lappers now have money and decent cars, and there were some classic cars and hot rods on display as car lovers converged on the city.
Hundreds came to the Top of Town and enjoyed a meal watching some classic vehicles drive through the CBD. It was so good to see our town alive and see local restaurants bursting at the seams.
I’d love to see regular themed events and parades back in the Main Street.
WE SHOW RESPECT
IT was sobering to see that after so many years of commemorating ANZAC Day, our City continues to show its respect to not only those that served, but also our current servicemen and women and our emergency services.
This year it was an honour to attend a dawn service at Ripley State Secondary College and the mid morning service at Redbank Plains.
I then went to the parade in town where it is was rewarding to see so many young people out paying respects and the number of schools and students marching.
JUNIOR FOOTY
Last Saturday morning I went to Redbank Plains, the home of the Bears to see their juniors in action.
They are now the biggest club in the local rugby league competition with 39 teams and more than 600 players.
I love seeing kids enjoying grass root sports.
Thank you to all volunteers, coaches and support crew, who make sport happen across our city.
Speaking of footy, it was good to be at the launch of the Ipswich State High Rugby League season.
Their open boys are currently the National Champions, and there is great belief they can go back to back.
TIME TO RETIRE
Just over 26 years ago Vonnie and her husband Alan opened Gawdy Green Copy & Print in the CBD.
Friday was Vonnie’s last day as she sold the business to long time employee Maryellen and her husband Warren.
LABOUR DAY MARCH
Thousands turned out for the annual Labour Day march though the city on the weekend.
Led by our great pipe bands they revealed the passion of our workers.
I was glad to march as a member of the Teachers Union.
