WHEN it comes to showing off your expertise at growing orchids there is one annual event you need to lock in.

It’s the Ipswich Spring Garden Spectacular and it’s not only a big weekend for the serious horticulturists.

The show’s popularity now sees more than 1000 people attending each year.

Over the weekend the Silkstone Public School Hall featured more than 400 entries in the orchid section as well as hundreds of entries from members of the Ipswich Bromeliad Society for their show which they run in conjunction with the Ipswich Orchid Society.

Helen Murray from Flinders View has been entering her best orchids for the show for the past 40 years.

The local orchid society life member once again featured when the prizes were handed out, winning the first-place ribbon for her Cattleya Cluster Type Orchid.

Helen said she has cut back a little in recent years with her orchids, but still had more than 300 at home she was nurturing.
