THE fightback victory by the Brisbane Lions Women’s team on Sunday over North Melbourne has given an invaluable boost to the side’s premiership chances according to their coach, Craig Starcevich.
The Lions were dominated in the first half of the game in Launceston and looked in deep trouble down 18 points at the start of the second half.
Through some inspired positional switches by the coaching team and improved effort and attitude by the players they clawed their way back to score an inspiring 5.5 (35) to 5.3 (33) victory.
Coach Starcevich said the win was super valuable for the new players who had joined the team this year.
The next two weeks sees the Lions away to Hawthorne and then at home under lights to Collingwood on Saturday, October 7.
Starcevich said these two games will define how the rest of the year will pan out for the side.
“It’s been a wonderful week for the club and on Sunday we were just glad we could uphold our part of the bargain,” he said.
The team now sits in equal third on a congested premiership ladder one win adrift of the joint undefeated leaders Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows.
The win on Sunday in Tasmania maintained the team’s undefeated record over Norths.
Shannon Campbell celebrated her 27th birthday by kicking what proved to be the winning goal.
Her snap in the final minutes put the Lions in front for the first time since early in the match.
Ally Anderson played an inspired second half for the Lions, while Lily Postlethwaite and captain Bre Koenen slotted vital goals in the third quarter.
