Make your life worthwhile

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love. …. And then we return home”

This words come from ta proverb that talks about our life on earth and its meaning. What are the chances that a human being is conceived and carried to term in this world of ours. What are the odds of anyone being born? If you were unlucky picking the powerball jackpot this year, you can rest assured that you have already won the lottery once in the game of chance, where some say the odds are 1 in 4.9 billion, just by being born into this world. Bit scary! …..

Yet, we were nothing before we were born. Life is a precious commodity, because it has been given to us as a gift. We are here for a purpose, and as long as we are six feet above the ground, we have the opportunity to make the most of the life that has been given to us. Some, have not been so lucky.

The earth as a planet started evolving billions of years ago. There is a theory that in about 2.8 billion year’s time, any remaining life will be extinguished due to very high surface temperatures. So we have a little time!

Though some pundits might disagree with these assumptions due to the current debate on climate change.

However, back to the present. Have you ever wondered about your existence here on earth, what you can contribute and how meaningful you live your life. There are probably many of us who can do better than we have been. Being more attentive, more loving and more aware of our influence on others. Yet there still is, particularly with younger people, the idea that time stands still, that there is plenty of time to do things.

Then one day they reach their 50’s and 60’s and “where has that time gone” they ask! All of a sudden there are things to do and see, places to travel, bodies to get fitter etc. Life is a funny thing, you think you have time, till you don’t. So, what we do on this earth reflects on the many people that know us, how we act and how we live and work in this given time we have available to us.

We may not be aware, but our kids take more notice of us than we think they do, this is born out by some following in the footsteps of their parents, either academically or through sporting affiliations.

They take notice of what we drink, if we smoke, how we act, our attitude to money and how we deal with others. Have you ever thought about the wonderful eulogies that people give to a loved one at a funeral.

Everyone agrees that they were a great human being, but how many share those comments with that person while they are still alive? Life, as we know it, is a ‘funny’ thing, full of contradictions, we want to do better and many of us have some grand ideas and willingness to do greater things, but somehow lack the fortitude to carry them out.

I guess we are only human after all. Still, we have some time before we depart, so let’s try and make a difference to our life and others around us. We are very ‘lucky’ to be here, so let’s make the most of it.
