Brisbane has eight years until it hosts the Olympic Games, and last week Ipswich City Mayor Teresa Harding was appointed to the Organising Committee.
The SEQ Mayors have backed Cr Harding as their latest appointment to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, following a vote at last week’s Council of Mayors (SEQ) Board Meeting.
She will join Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner in representing the councils of South East Queensland in the delivery of the 2032 Games, filling the position vacated by former Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart.
Cr Harding said it was an honour to represent her fellow mayors on the organising committee and play a role in shaping the biggest event our region had ever seen.
“Having been a spectator during the Sydney 2000 Games, I would have never imagined that today I would be selected to be a board member of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee,” she said.
“The Brisbane 2032 Games has the ability to galvanise our region and boost our international exposure and economic investment, unlike any other event we’ve seen before. This is a fantastic vote of confidence in the collaborative work we have been doing in Ipswich, as this role is really focused on working together as a region.”
The Council of Mayors (SEQ) initiated the 2032 bid back in March 2015 as a catalyst to bring forward transport infrastructure to support the rapid growth we are seeing in South East Queensland.
“While my primary focus will be on representing South East Queensland, the 2032 Games is a great opportunity for all Queenslanders. I am dedicated to building enduring benefits and a legacy that will positively impact generations to come,” Cr Harding said.
