AS the days get longer and temperatures rise, it’s time to refresh outdoor spaces for summer entertaining and relaxation. Justine Wilson, principal stylist of Vault Interiors Property Styling, shares her expert outdoor styling tips to help create a welcoming and stylish outdoor.

  1. Create zones for entertaining and relaxation: Divide your outdoor area into functional zones. Have a dedicated dining space for meals, a lounge area for relaxing, and a sunny spot for lounging or sunbathing. Use rugs, potted plants, or different furniture to define each zone.
  2. Opt for durable, weather-resistant furniture: Choose outdoor furniture that can withstand the elements. Look for UV-resistant, water-resistant, and rust-proof materials like aluminium, teak, or wicker. Don’t forget to add some outdoor cushions for comfort, but make sure they’re made from weather-proof fabric.
  3. Layer textures and soft furnishings: Introduce textures through cushions, throws, and rugs to make the space feel cosy and inviting. Use natural materials like jute or outdoor-grade fabrics that can handle the heat and moisture of summer.
  4. Use plants for a lush, green look: Adding greenery to your outdoor space instantly elevates the look. Choose a mix of potted plants, hanging baskets, and vertical gardens to create visual interest and enhance the natural vibe.
  5. Invest in outdoor lighting: Good lighting is key to extending your outdoor enjoyment into the evening. String lights, lanterns, or solar-powered garden lights add ambiance and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for summer nights.
  6. Incorporate shade solutions: Ensure your space is comfortable on the hottest days by incorporating shade options such as umbrellas, pergolas, or shade sails. These not only provide relief from the sun but also add an architectural element to your outdoor design.
  7. Add statement pieces: A standout furniture item, like a bold-coloured outdoor sofa, or a statement fire pit, can become the focal point of your outdoor area. Statement pieces make a big impact and instantly update your outdoor space.
  8. Mix and match outdoor dining options: Use different seating styles, like a combination of benches and chairs, to create a more casual, relaxed vibe for outdoor dining. Opt for stylish melamine or bamboo dining sets that are durable and perfect for outdoor use.
  9. Install an outdoor bar or kitchen: Summer is all about entertaining, and having a dedicated outdoor bar or kitchen makes hosting easy and fun. You can go all out with a full outdoor kitchen or keep it simple with a stylish bar cart stocked with your favourite drinks and accessories.
  10. Keep it practical with storage solutions: Outdoor spaces should be as functional as they are beautiful. Incorporate stylish storage options like outdoor ottomans with storage or built-in cabinets to keep your outdoor essentials organised.
