THE stopwatch has started for the newly elected State Government to deliver a plan for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics in Brisbane, with advocates for Ipswich sport and infrastructure remaining positive on the legacy projects being delivered to the city.

Ipswich and District Athletics president Vic Pascoe told Local Ipswich News that they had to get moving on plans and construction of infrastructure.

“It would be nice for them to get their act together and make up their minds whatever is supposed to happen,” he said.

“My choice is to redevelop the QEII stadium, with a new grandstand to allow Para Athletes to have proper access and training facilities.

“It is a well-known fact that QEII is the best venue in Australia as voted just recently by the athletes and public.

“Ipswich needs a tartan track as so many other regional towns already have a tartan track.

“If we had one the city would benefit financially, as teams from other countries would be able to train here as well as having various meetings to attract more people.

“USQ here in Ipswich is the best location for a tartan track.”

State Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said she would continue to advocate for both the tartan track and other sporting infrastructure as she has in the past.

The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority was established in legislation introduced to Parliament last week, with the committee announced to lead the path forward towards the marquee sporting event eight years away.

“I was excited to be at recent Future Brisbane event to hear the announcement of the board who will undertake the Queensland Government’s 100-day review into Games infrastructure,” Mayor Harding said.

“It was reassuring to hear the Premier’s focus on maximising the use of existing facilities across the region.”

Premier David Crisafulli said introducing the new laws would help deliver a world-class event.

“Hosting the Games brings unique opportunities to forge ahead with generational infrastructure, transport and sustainable economic growth to set our State up for a bright and prosperous future.”
