IPSWICH is set to benefit from a major boost in internet infrastructure, with the Albanese Government announcing a $3 billion investment in the National Broadband Network (NBN) should it be re-elected this year.
The region’s strong demand for data, with an average monthly usage of 546GB in March 2024, has propelled it into the top 10 nationally for data consumption.
This investment would enhance connectivity and meet the growing needs of Ipswich’s residents and businesses.
The latest statistics show how far the network has come, with 6700 families and businesses in the suburbs of Goodna, Redbank, Collingwood Park and Bellbird Park the first with access when it was switched on in 2013.
The promised investment will deliver high-quality fibre internet upgrades to more than 600,000 Australian homes and businesses – over half located in regional Australia.
NBN Co CEO Ellie Sweeney said the average household consumed about 10 times more data than it did when the NBN was built, and it was an essential part of work and life.
“This is the final piece in the puzzle – today’s announcement will mean access to faster and more reliable internet for millions of Australians,” she said.
Australia’s peak national communications consumer body, ACCAN, welcomed the ongoing investment in the NBN as an important step toward delivering a faster and more reliable internet.
