RESIDENTS of Karalee, Barellan Point, and surrounding areas are voicing serious concerns over potential flood risks linked to the proposed Stage 7 development of Citiswich Industrial Park.

The development, located at 239, 336-395 Warrego Highway, Riverview, seeks to raise land levels to approximately 21.5 metres.

Residents fear this could worsen flooding, arguing that altering natural water flows may intensify future flood events, placing homes and lives in danger.

One long-term local, who has lived in the area for 30 years, said flooding had progressively worsened, leaving many anxious about the next major event.

“It’s frightening for residents holding their breath to see what happens next,” she said.

“The future isn’t looking great for property owners due to greed and poor decisions by authorities.

“Many people can no longer afford insurance, so another flood would be simply devastating.”

State Member for Ipswich West Wendy Bourne has urged Ipswich City Council to closely examine the development’s potential impact.

She suggested the Council consider formally requesting Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie to intervene with a state review.

“This development could significantly affect the safety and livelihoods of our local communities,” Ms Bourne said.

“We need proper flood mitigation measures in place before any approvals are granted.

“The people of Karalee, Barellan Point, and surrounding areas deserve to feel safe in their homes, and this development threatens that safety.”

Mayor Teresa Harding said the Council had been engaging with residents since 2023 and would continue to provide updates on the progress of this proposal.

Cr Harding said that while councillors were available to discuss concerns, under state legislation they could not influence council officers during the assessment process.
