Report’s in: Our libraries all deserve a gold star

WHEN I was working at council years ago spreading news about the city’s libraries was one of my favourite jobs.

There’s been a lot of changes since then. The CBD redevelopment is all but finished and its centrepiece is the library in Tulmur Place opposite the stand-alone children’s library. Rosewood now has its own, and there have been improvements at Redbank Plains.

The 2024 report card presented to the Community and Sport Committee this week highlighted just how much residents love their libraries.

The numbers are staggering. Here’s a few to highlight what I mean.

The busiest branch for visitors was Springfield Central with nearly 288,000 visitors, while the busiest month was at the Children’s Library in September with 30,000+ people attending.

Online numbers are through the roof, with just over 628,000 virtual visits which is a whopping 20 per cent increase over the previous year.

Picture Ipswich now has a collection of almost 42,000 items including images, videos, documents and sound recordings. This website alone attracted nearly half a million page views last year.

The list of impressive numbers goes on, but you get the general idea. Ipswich Libraries all deserve a gold star.

Explore your local library –you won’t be disappointed.
