TODAY we’re going to ham it up a bit and talk about bacon.

  • NEW LABELLING:
  • WOULD YOU SPEND MORE TO BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE?

Bacon, like most other foods, has gone up in price.

What most people aren’t aware of is that about 70 per cent of bacon on our supermarket shelves, is imported.

Australia does not produce enough to satisfy the country’s appetite for ham and bacon.

And it’s these prices that have gone up, which should in turn help our farmers in Australia with pricing of their bacon products.

According to ABC Rural, half of the pork Australia imports is from the US, with the Netherlands, Denmark and Canada among other top sources.

Regulations in Australia mean that all fresh pork in Australia is Australian. Any product you buy with a bone is Aussie grown.

NEW LABELLING:

It appears that there are changes coming to our supermarkets.

New information will not only tell consumers the percentage of Australian product, but also the level of Australian participation in the product.

Also, there will be a new system for that little bar code that the shops scan, supposedly making it “easier” for customers.

WOULD YOU SPEND MORE TO BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE?

This is a hard sell for most of us as the spirit is willing, but practicality and our budget are making these types of decisions difficult.

It is hard to see the farmers struggling, while large chains are making millions.

Till next time.
