Asthma Action Plan a necessity

WITH the new school year in full swing, parents are being reminded that updating their child’s Asthma Action Plan is just as important as packing a school hat.

Asthma remains a significant concern in Australian schools, affecting about 386,000 children – about two per classroom.

It is the leading cause of disease burden in children under 15, with four in 10 missing school each year due to asthma.

In 2021-22, 26,500 children required emergency hospital care for asthma-related issues.

Despite these alarming statistics, only two-thirds of children with asthma currently have an Asthma Action Plan, which is crucial in ensuring the condition is well-managed.

This plan provides clear instructions for teachers, coaches and caregivers on how to respond in case of a flare-up.

Asthma Australia CEO Kate Miranda emphasised the necessity of having an up-to-date plan.

“Sending your child to school without an updated written Asthma Action Plan is like letting them play in the sun without a hat. They are exposed,” she said.

“It’s a small but essential step to keep them protected – whether from unexpected asthma flare-ups or the sun’s rays.”

An Asthma Action Plan provides step-by-step guidance on daily care, managing flare-ups, and responding to emergencies, with the first step to book an asthma review with a doctor.
