THERE are teachers, and then there are the Calvin Hegvolds of the teaching field.
Last week Bremer State High School announced the veteran teacher had joined the school’s Basketball Academy as a coach, providing an injection of pure experience, basketball IQ and respect for both the sport and teaching that are very hard to find.
Mr Hegvold, affectionately known as Mr H, takes the reins of the Year 9/10 Girls team for the upcoming season after an impressive 35-year career as a Health and Physical Education teacher, along with a long and distinguished coaching history with Ipswich Basketball.
Although he officially retired from Silkstone State School last year, his love for the game and commitment to mentoring young athletes remains as strong as ever.
“I assisted with the Opens last year,” Mr Hegvold said.
“We don’t have height, but certainly some potential there in those girls.
“We qualified for Champion Schools, so trying to win that is the goal.”
With his extensive experience in both teaching and coaching, Mr H is set to be a major asset to Bremer’s Basketball Academy.
His leadership is expected to not only enhance the skill development of the players but also instil valuable life lessons such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance.
“We are thrilled to have Mr H join our academy,” said a spokesperson from Bremer State High School.
“His dedication to the sport and to youth development will make a real difference in the lives of our students.”
Students and parents alike are excited about the opportunity to work with such a seasoned coach.
As the new season kicks off, the Year 9/10 Girls team is eager to train under Mr Hegvold’s guidance, and compete at their highest level.
With a coach of his calibre leading the way, the future looks bright for Bremer’s Basketball Academy, a
program that was already setting the benchmark when it came to class on the hardcourt.
