A LONG-standing community group supporting hundreds of local seniors says it has been evicted from its home of nearly a decade, sparking public outcry and calls for transparency from Ipswich City Council.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) Ipswich, a volunteer-led organisation offering more than 50 weekly programs to over 400 senior citizens, says it was abruptly locked out of its activity centre at the Woodend Nature Reserve earlier this month.
While it has since been given temporary access to the building again, U3A Ipswich President Laurie Zaat said the eviction came as a complete shock.
“This came out of nowhere,” Mr Zaat said.
“We’ve had an informal arrangement for years and have been pushing for a formal lease since 2020. But instead of resolving the issue, Council simply cut us off with no warning, no explanation, and no opportunity to respond.”
Since 2015, U3A has occupied the site under a renewable Permit to Use, allowing rent-free access in exchange for a holding deposit. The site, officially designated as an education centre, sits on Queensland Crown land held in trust by Ipswich City Council.
Mr Zaat said the lack of notice left the organisation’s equipment and materials vulnerable to theft or damage and claimed repeated attempts to contact Council’s Manager of Natural Environment, Philip Smith had gone unanswered.
“What a slap in the face to a group of volunteers who’ve spent decades promoting the health and wellbeing of local seniors,” he said.
In response to media inquiries, Ipswich City Council acknowledged U3A’s contribution but said there were legal obligations linked to the site’s conservation status.
“The U3A Ipswich and West Moreton is a fabulous organisation that provides our seniors with opportunities for learning, volunteering, exercise, and social interaction,” a Council spokesperson said.
“Council is obligated to meet the requirements imposed as a trustee and is currently reviewing the future use of the centre.”
Council has now granted the group temporary access to the building until June 30 and says it will consult with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (DETSI) to assess the possibility of a formal lease.
Mr Zaat is calling on the State Government to clarify whether any directives have been issued regarding rezoning or redevelopment of the land.
