A Queensland-based charity supporting at-risk youth is set to expand its footprint in Ipswich, thanks to a significant boost in Federal Government funding.

TRACTION for Young People, which delivers hands-on learning programs in schools to help disengaged youth build confidence and skills, has received an $850,000 grant under the Albanese Government’s Youth Empowerment Program.

The funding will support the charity’s “Build” program, where young people complete practical projects – such as building a bicycle they get to keep – while developing confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement.

TRACTION Founder Sandy Murdoch said the funding would support the charity’s ongoing commitment to helping young people struggling to find their place in traditional educational settings.

“We know that not every young person thrives in a classroom. Our programs give them a chance to succeed in a different environment – one that’s practical, supportive and tailored to their needs,” Mr Murdoch said.

TRACTION CEO Annabel Prescott added that the organisation’s success was built on strong community partnerships.

TRACTION currently operates in multiple Ipswich schools, including Bremer State High School, Ipswich State High School, Redbank Plains State High School, Bellbird Park State High School, Ripley Valley State Secondary College, and Springfield Central State High School.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann recently visited a TRACTION workshop at Bremer State High School, where he met students, mentors and charity leadership.

“It was terrific to visit Bremer State High School to meet some incredible young people and the dedicated mentors from TRACTION for Young People,” Mr Neumann said.

“TRACTION is already making a real difference in the lives of the young people I met. Through hands-on projects, they’re gaining valuable skills and a real sense of accomplishment.”

Mr Neumann said the funding would allow TRACTION to reach more young people across Ipswich and continue its mission of early intervention.

“This is about helping young people make healthy choices, stay engaged with their education, and steer away from anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“TRACTION is fostering strong connections between families, schools and the wider community. They’re helping kids stay on track, and that’s exactly what our region needs.”

Mr Neumann said TRACTION’s proven track record made them a strong candidate for support.

“They’ve shown they can deliver real, measurable outcomes, and I’m proud to see our community benefit from this important investment.”
