IPSWICH’S beloved SPARK Festival lit up the city last Friday night, with an electrifying launch that showcased its strong commitment to inclusivity.

Now in its fifth year and running from July 11-20, the Festival has transformed Ipswich into a creative playground brimming with light, sound, and community connection.

The night’s flagship event – SPARK Opening Night: Carpark Party – set the tone for a welcoming and accessible celebration.

Held in the Ipswich Civic Centre carpark, the event featured standout live music including Groove Terminator and a Daft Punk tribute, as well as interactive elements through the Nicholas Street Precinct like The Bubble Canteen and a rainbow-themed takeover at Banshees Bar.

With many events either free or heavily subsidised, the festival continues to ensure cost is not a barrier for residents and visitors.

Accessibility has been carefully considered throughout the program.

Many venues and events include sensory-friendly elements, companion tickets, Auslan interpretation, and clear information for people with diverse needs.

Family events such as the Teddy Bears’ Picnic and Little Day Out have been designed to be inclusive of all children, while interactive installations like HEXADECA allow people of all ages and abilities to explore sound and movement in creative ways.

SPARK Ipswich also proudly reflects the city’s cultural richness. Events like World of Music Ipswich (WOMI) and the community-led production HIPSWICH highlight the diversity of Ipswich’s residents and amplify voices historically underrepresented.

This is more than just a festival – it’s a celebration of everything that makes Ipswich great: the people, the culture and the unstoppable artistic spirit for which Ipswich is renowned.

Last year, an estimated 45,000 people attended SPARK Ipswich, and early signs suggest this year’s festival could attract even more.

The celebrations continue with a packed schedule that includes outdoor light displays, silent discos, world music, drag shows, kids’ entertainment, workshops and more.

SPARK Ipswich offers a space where everyone belongs.
