IPSWICH State High School’s rugby league program delivered a mix of promising signs and powerhouse performances last week, with multiple teams asserting their finals credentials.
The Year 7 Boys kicked off with an early try but were eventually overrun by Stretton State College, going down 32-18. Coach Ben Newton said the result offered valuable lessons.
“After scoring in the first set of the game, they were their own worst enemies,” Newton said.
“Unable to hold the ball, complete sets and build any pressure – this led to Stretton dominating possession and making the most of it.”
In contrast, the Year 8 Renouf Boys dominated Caloundra State High School 46-6 in a clinical display. Coach Peter Poole praised the team’s discipline and execution.
“From the opening whistle, we controlled the pace of the game with strong defence, slick ball movement and excellent communication across the park,” he said.
“The team worked hard to fine-tune key areas of the game plan, showing clear improvements ahead of the upcoming semi-finals.”
The Year 9 Hancock Boys also impressed, coming away with a 42-20 win over Kings Christian College.
The Year 10 Walters Cup side finished its season on a high with a 22-6 win over Mountain Creek. Head coach Shane Harris highlighted defensive grit as the key to victory.
Meanwhile, the Langer Reserves put on a rugby league masterclass, thumping Stretton State College 74-4. Coach Jonathan Dore said he was proud of the consistency and effort shown.
The Langer Cup side mirrored the Reserves’ dominance with a comprehensive 54-4 win over the same opposition.
Coach Josh Bretherton praised the team’s commitment to the game plan.
“Very good win – excellent work from the boys to stick to team-first, disciplined football,” he said.
Finally, the Titans Schoolgirl Cup side surged into the semi-finals with a commanding 54-0 shutout over Stretton State College.
