WHEN Oz Comic Con first came to Brisbane in 2014, cosplay was reserved for the true fans and children.

These days it is part of the tradition for the thousands that flock to the Brisbane Convention Centre dressed to celebrate something they love about pop culture, share their passion with other fans and add to the atmosphere of the annual event.

Woodend’s Mandy Nunn is one of those who has emersed herself in the creative side of cosplaying and costume design.

“I love how creative it is and how people create these really detailed costumes, and the way each person wears the costume differently and embodies the character differently,” she said.

“Becoming someone else and stepping out of the everyday and becoming this character that people love is what I love about it too.

“This convention I’m doing Elle Driver from Kill Bill, played by Daryl Hannah. There’s no set costume for that character so I will have a look at her costume and go and find the pieces online and put the costume together myself.

“I want to craft more, get more creative and tap into that more. The next big cosplay I want to do is The Huntress from Dead By Daylight. I want to make the mask for that.”

Mandy goes under the name Mighty Maiden Cosplay for her cosplay.

Cosplayers usually dress to represent a character from movies, cult television shows, books or video games.

Mandy said she looks for a character that is recognisable but not often seen in the world of cosplay.

“I like to do cosplays not a lot of people do,” she said. “There are the mainstream costumes like Captain America, Daredevil and Deadpool. I like to do ones like Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat, and classic ones too that, when people see them, they notice because they are not used to seeing that character.

“That’s a trademark for me. I like a costume to stir a bit of nostalgia for people. They are there seeing mainstream characters and then they see a random character from a movie that they remember.

“I did Star from The Lost Boys because that is my favourite films of all time.”

Oz Comic-Con is on at the Brisbane Convention Centre this weekend, September 13 and 14.
