But before you can sell property in Queensland, you need to meet certain training and licensing requirements.

To work legally as a real estate agent in Queensland, you must hold a registration certificate or a full real estate licence issued by the Office of Fair Trading.

The entry-level requirement is completion of the Real Estate Registration Course (Statement of Attainment in Real Estate Practice), usually delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

This covers key areas such as property law, trust accounting, ethical conduct, and the sales process.

If you wish to operate your own agency, employ other agents, or manage trust accounts, you’ll need to go further and complete the Real Estate Licence Course, which is a broader qualification.

Once the training is complete, you can apply to the Office of Fair Trading for the appropriate licence, subject to eligibility checks including criminal history and insolvency status.

INFORMAL QUALIFICATIONS

Beyond the formal training, successful agents often bring valuable informal skills and personal qualities.

Strong communication, negotiation and networking abilities are essential, as much of the role revolves around building trust and relationships with clients.

Local market knowledge, customer service experience, and the ability to manage time effectively also set good agents apart.

Many new entrants start as assistants or in administrative roles within an agency, giving them first-hand exposure to the day-to-day demands of the job before pursuing full registration.

Mentorship from experienced agents is another common way to gain practical insight and confidence.

A BALANCED PATH

While the formal qualifications are mandatory to work legally, the informal skills often determine long-term success in the industry.
