THE title of Australia’s 2025 4×4 of the Year has been awarded to two very different yet equally capable machines: the all-new Toyota Prado Altitude and the legendary Toyota LandCruiser 76 Series (also called the GDJ76).

After rigorous on-road and off-road testing, both vehicles scored a joint top mark – 156 out of 200 – tying them at first place.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Toyota Prado Altitude: Modern, versatile, and family-friendly, the Prado excels in comfort, technology and everyday usability. The cabin is praised as “the most comfortable, best-laid-out and equipped” of all the contenders, whether on sealed roads or rugged tracks.

LandCruiser 76 (GDJ76 Series): In contrast, the 76 Series is the no-nonsense workhorse: rugged, utilitarian, and built to endure. It may have fewer creature comforts, but its old-school 4WD DNA, simple systems, and ability to go the distance in harsh conditions earned high marks.

The new driveline revisions are widely appreciated for bringing performance improvements while staying true to its roots.

HOW THEY WERE JUDGED

The judging panel evaluated six leading candidate 4WDs against tight criteria: off-road capability, on-road comfort, equipment and features, reliability, value, and ability to be adapted or accessorised.

Other strong performers included:

  • Nissan Patrol Warrior (148/200)
  • Ineos Grenadier (146/200)
  • GWM Tank 300 Ultra and Ford Everest lagged behind in this particular contest.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR BUYERS

If you want modern amenities, safety tech, and comfort without sacrificing serious off-road skill, the Prado Altitude is a superb all-rounder.

If your priorities lean more toward toughness, long life, and minimal maintenance in remote or rough terrain, the LandCruiser 76 remains one of the best rugged platforms available in Australia.

In short, 2025’s best 4WD honours are shared by a duo that represent two poles of the four-wheel-drive spectrum.
