Cheerleading is a family affair for GG Bears as they train for Hawaii

FOR the GG Bears, cheerleading isn’t just a sport – it’s a full-on family affair.

Mum Claire Green, daughter Bella Maree, and son Tayen Ray are proof that when passion and teamwork meet, incredible things can happen – on and off the mat.

It all began when 12-year-old Bella decided she wanted to try something new. After years of jazz, ballet and tap, cheerleading caught her eye.

“It just seemed to tick every box – teamwork, fitness, confidence, and creativity,” said Claire.

“Once she started, I was completely drawn in too! Watching her train and perform made me want to be part of it, and then her brother joined – before I knew it, we were all training together.”

Now, the family spends five nights a week at the gym, training side by side for competitions, including the upcoming Global Games in Hawaii.

For Claire, competing alongside her children has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“It’s surreal and so special. Not many parents get to share something like this with their kids. It’s emotional, proud, and a little nerve-wracking, but something I’ll cherish forever.”

Balancing work, school, and an intense training schedule isn’t easy, but the family takes it in stride.

“It’s definitely a juggle,” Claire admits. “But we make it work – lots of organisation, meal prepping, and a good sense of humour. The best part is we’re all in it together, keeping each other motivated.”

For Claire, the biggest challenge has been finding that fine line between “coach mode” and “mum mode”.

“I want them to do their best, but I also want them to enjoy the journey. It’s taught us so much about resilience and teamwork.”

Bella, who has been competing with her mum for two years, says the experience has been “amazing”.

“My favourite part is spending time with my family and helping each other,” she said.

“Sometimes it’s hard remembering routines or getting new skills, but I just keep pushing – especially when I was learning my back tuck!”

For 16-year-old Tayen, cheer has been a new but rewarding challenge.

“It’s my first time competing, so I’m really excited,” he said.

Like his mum and sister, he has faced his share of challenges, but he’s also the team motivator, always ready with a good-luck hug or a word of encouragement.

“I make sure Mum’s ready before she goes on stage, and I check that Bella’s feeling okay and can push through,” Tayen said.

Claire said their training had made them so much closer as a family.

“No matter what happens, that’s the real win,” she said.
