QUEENSLAND is welcoming a new wave of skilled tradies, with the largest QBuild apprentice intake since 2002.
The State Government has confirmed 79 new apprentices will join the ranks this year — a 46 per cent increase on last year — highlighting a renewed focus on building and maintaining the infrastructure Queenslanders rely on.
Selected from almost 2,000 applicants, the new apprentices will train in trades including carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, refrigeration mechanics, and cabinet making.
Minister for Housing and Public Works, Sam O’Connor, said the apprentices will play a vital role in QBuild’s building, maintenance, and disaster recovery programs.
“These apprentices are joining QBuild exactly when our state needs more tradies to deliver the projects Queenslanders need,” Mr O’Connor said.
“QBuild is central to delivering and maintaining our social homes, schools, and police stations, and responding quickly when disasters strike to help communities get back on their feet.
“What these apprentices will work on over the coming years will help shape our state, and that’s something they should be proud of.”
For the new intake, the opportunity is more than just a job — it’s a chance to contribute to communities in a meaningful way. Apprentice Elizabeth Bennett said she was thrilled to join QBuild.
“I’m energised by the opportunity to join a team with such a strong reputation for service and craftsmanship,” Ms Bennett said.
“This marks an exciting new chapter, and I’m determined to learn as much as I can while contributing positively to work sites and the Queensland community. I’m excited to work on projects that truly impact Queenslanders’ daily lives, from maintaining essential infrastructure to supporting social housing and rebuilding after natural disasters. Playing even a small part in strengthening and supporting our communities feels incredibly meaningful.”
With the largest intake in nearly a quarter of a century, the State Government is signalling a new era for QBuild — one that prioritises skills, jobs, and delivery to ensure Queensland keeps building, maintaining, and thriving.
