A lifelong belief in giving back has led Ipswich resident Annette Kirkwood to become one of the most dedicated supporters of Carinity Colthup Manor, where she visits every day and donates regularly in gratitude for the care her close friend receives.
“I learnt at an early age that it is more blessed to give than to receive, and I’ve tried to live like that,” Ms Kirkwood said.
“I’ve had a wonderful life and I feel very blessed. I need to give back what I’ve been given. Every little bit helps.”
Ms Kirkwood’s connection to Carinity spans generations, with her grandfather Ernest Kirwood among the early residents of Clifford House in the 1950s, forging a family link to the organisation that continues today.
Her current support is focused on Colthup Manor in Ipswich, inspired by her close friend and former housemate Marg Elvery, who moved into the home two years ago following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The two women, both former nurses, once lived on the Colthup Manor premises and walked to nearby Ipswich Hospital for work.
They were also members of the Bella Nova Singers, performing for residents at Colthup Manor.
Today, Ms Kirkwood visits Ms Elvery every day in the home’s memory support unit, which provides specialised care for people living with dementia-related conditions.
She said the warmth and openness of staff have made her daily visits both easy and meaningful.
“They told me I can come up here every day and sit with her. I really look forward to coming.”
