FOR a pair of feature finals worth a combined $315,000 in prizemoney, Q2 Parklands delivered plenty of excitement as Cumbria Jack continued his dominant rise through the staying ranks while Consigliere produced a Group One upset.
The Group Two Cyndie’s Magic Final over 600m carried a $90,000 purse and all eyes were on Cumbria Jack, who started a red-hot $1.28 favourite after an extraordinary heat victory the previous week where he put almost 11 lengths on his rivals on debut over the distance.
My Boy Bingo was first to show from the boxes and led early along the rail, with Cumbria Jack settling in pursuit before making his move down the back straight.
The Fernando Bale x Cumbria Ninno chaser swept around the outside of the leader, quickly established a four-length advantage and powered clear in the run home to score impressively.
The victory maintained Cumbria Jack’s perfect record over the 600m journey with two wins from two starts and improved his overall record to 25 wins and eight placings from just 36 career starts. The win also pushed his career earnings beyond $460,000.
Earlier in the night, the Group One Flying Amy Classic Final over 520m offered up a major upset.
Winsome Jet was heavily supported as the $1.50 favourite but it was Consigliere who exploded from the boxes and immediately took control of the race.
The $7.50 chance quickly opened a sizeable break and had established a five-length lead approaching the home turn while the favourite worked hard in pursuit.
Winsome Jet charged home late and reduced the margin significantly down the straight, but Consigliere refused to surrender, holding on to score by one-and-a-half lengths.
Handler Luke Thompson said the team was happy with the win but that the chaser had more to offer.
“It was a really good win,” he said.
