WINTER has a way of exposing the little problems around the home that often go unnoticed during the warmer months.

A small roof leak, a blocked gutter, a drafty window or a slippery pathway may seem minor now, but left unchecked, they can quickly become expensive repairs or safety hazards as the colder, wetter weather sets in.

For older Australians, winter is the perfect time to take a proactive approach to home maintenance. A few simple checks and jobs completed now can help keep your home warm, safe and comfortable throughout the season.

PROTECTING YOUR HOME

Winter rain and cooler temperatures can create ideal conditions for moisture damage, mould growth and unwanted pests seeking shelter indoors.

Start by inspecting your roof, gutters and drainage systems. Remove leaves and debris from gutters and ensure downpipes are directing water well away from the foundations of your home. Pooling water can contribute to structural issues and create favourable conditions for termites and other pests.

It’s also worth checking timber structures such as decks, fences, pergolas and retaining walls for signs of rot, damage or pest activity. Inside the home, keep an eye out for water stains, mould, peeling paint or unusual smells that may indicate hidden moisture problems.

GIVING THE GARDEN SOME ATTENTION

While many plants slow their growth during winter, there is still plenty that can be done to keep gardens healthy and thriving.

Prune dead or damaged branches to improve airflow and reduce the risk of disease. Remove fallen leaves and garden waste that can attract pests or encourage mould growth in damp conditions.

Applying a fresh layer of mulch can help protect plant roots from colder temperatures, retain moisture and suppress weeds.Lawns also require less watering during winter, but regular maintenance remains important. Clear away debris and avoid overwatering to prevent soggy patches and disease.
