YOUNG basketballers perfecting their jump shots and skaters chasing their next trick are set to benefit from a pair of grassroots sporting upgrades across Ipswich.
Ipswich City Council has approved two community-led projects through its Provisional Projects sub-program, with improvements planned for the skate park at Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve and the multi-purpose court at Marburg Community Oval.
At Redbank Plains, a new 10sqm concrete slab will be installed to connect sections of the skate park after users raised safety concerns about an unconcreted patch that was causing riders to lose balance.
Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine said the project was a direct response to community feedback.
“Skaters using the park raised an issue of losing balance and falling over on this patch of unconcreted ground, so Council decided to link the whole floor to make it easier for skaters,” Cr Augustine said.
Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen said while the upgrade was relatively small, it would have a significant impact on those using the facility.
Meanwhile, Marburg’s multi-purpose court at the Community Oval will finally receive a dedicated basketball hoop, giving local players the opportunity to shoot hoops without having to share netball infrastructure.
Division 4 Councillor David Martin said the addition addressed a long-standing gap in the community’s sporting facilities.
“Marburg residents currently have a multipurpose court at the Marburg Community Oval for netball and basketball, but there’s no basketball hoop setup there, which is about to change.”
Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden said the projects reflected Council’s commitment to creating active, healthy and connected neighbourhoods.
