SUPERCARS is set to rev up Ipswich’s economy once again this month, with thousands of motorsport fans expected to descend on the city for the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440.
The championship’s return to Ipswich last year for the first time since 2019 attracted more than 22,958 spectators from near and far to watch Mustangs and Camaros battle it out around Queensland Raceway’s iconic “Paperclip”, delivering a significant boost to the city’s $460 million tourism industry and the broader local economy.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 had become one of the city’s biggest sporting events, delivering major economic benefits while showcasing Ipswich to a national audience.
“Supercars’ return to Ipswich last year for the first time since 2019 was a huge success,” she said.
“The Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 is one of Ipswich’s biggest sporting events.
“We’re getting ready for another round of Supercars fever as one of only two Supercars events held in South East Queensland returns to Ipswich.”
Before the racing begins at Queensland Raceway from August 21 to 23, fans will have the chance to meet
all 27 Supercars drivers at the free Supercars Fanfare event in Tulmur Place at the Nicholas Street Precinct on
Thursday, August 20, from 4.30-6.30pm.
Mayor Harding said the free fan event attracted more than 2600 people last year and gave the community the opportunity to get up close with the stars of Australian motorsport before they hit the track.
“Before they take to the hallowed asphalt of Queensland Raceway, the drivers will be in Tulmur Place meeting fans, signing free posters and celebrating with the community,” she said.
“There will also be race car displays, including a Red Bull Ampol Supercar, children’s activities and plenty of prize giveaways, making it a fantastic family event.”
