THE Sydney Roosters have been crowned the 2026 NRL Premiers after surviving a thrilling 19-18 grand final victory over a gallant Newcastle Knights which went right down to the wire.
The Knights looked to have stunned the rugby league world early, racing to a 12-0 lead and sending the packed stadium into shock.
Newcastle scored the first two tries through a barnstorming run by Francis Manuleleua and a near 100 metre effort by Kalyn Ponga, while the Roosters struggled to convert their chances.
But champions find a way, and slowly but surely the Roosters worked their way back into the contest.
The turning point came in the 59th minute when champion winger Mark Nawaqanitawase crossed for a crucial try to put the Roosters in front for the first time. Suddenly, the momentum had swung and the Roosters were zoning in on victory.
With the pressure mounting, Daly Cherry-Evans calmly slotted a field goal in the 69th minute to stretch the lead to seven points and give the Roosters some valuable breathing space.
Still, the Knights had one final fight left in them.
In the 76th minute, Newcastle crossed for a dramatic try, with the sideline conversion reducing the margin to just one point.
At 19-18, the final minutes became a nervous affair as both sides battled desperately for control.
Then came the final hooter – relief and celebration erupted as the Roosters were officially crowned the 2026 NRL Premiers.
Roosters Fullback James Tedesco produced a sensational performance throughout the grand final and was deservedly awarded the Clive Churchill Medal as the best player on the field.
The Roosters are Champions, but the Knights can hold their heads high after one of the bravest grand final efforts seen in years.
Earlier the Roosters Women got Grand Final day off to the perfect start, producing a dominant first half before running out 30-6 winners over the Broncos to complete an undefeated season.
Brisbane battled hard after the break, but it was not enough.
It was a tough way for Broncos legend Ali Brigginshaw to finish her career, but her incredible achievements will be difficult to surpass.
In the first Game of the Day, Queensland celebrated as Hostplus Premiers the Redcliffe Dolphins demolished Penrith 68-14.
