Queensland Raceway’s Spring Matsuri has once again proven why it has become one of the biggest drift events in the country, with a huge weekend of sideways action, massive giveaways and a spectacular show that pushed the event to another level.
Already promoted by Queensland Raceway as one of Australia’s biggest drift festivals, Spring Matsuri brings together two days of drifting, car culture, trade displays and thousands of spectators across multiple track layouts.
But this year, Queensland Raceway went far beyond simply putting on another drift meeting.
The event was turned into a full-blown motorsport spectacle.
One of the biggest talking points was the incredible prize pool, headlined by Tony Quinn’s famous “Popeye drift car”, giving one lucky person the opportunity to take home a genuine piece of Queensland Raceway drift history.
As if giving away a drift car wasn’t enough, Queensland Raceway also had a “Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 1500” up for grabs thanks to Llewellyn Motors and General Motors.
The Silverado competition was drawn live during the Matsuri event on October 4, making the weekend about much more than just watching the action on track.
For the spectators, however, the show after dark was arguably the biggest highlight.
Queensland Raceway produced a massive fireworks display, combining the traditional fireworks show with drifting cars carrying their own pyrotechnics.
Cars sliding around the circuit with “fireworks shooting from them” created an incredible scene of tyre smoke, flames, colour and noise, delivering what was billed as an Australian first and giving fans something completely different to a normal drift event.
It was the type of spectacle that showed exactly where Queensland Raceway is heading under Tony Quinn.
Rather than simply hosting motorsport, the venue continues to build major events around entertainment, atmosphere and giving spectators a reason to bring the entire family along for a big day out.
Spring Matsuri already has all the ingredients drift fans want, but adding major giveaways, fireworks and entertainment takes the event into another category.
