A PAY rise can feel like the answer to financial pressure.
More money coming in should make things easier, creating breathing room to help you get ahead. Sometimes it does, but extra income can disappear surprisingly quickly when there is no clear system for managing it.
As income rises, spending can rise with it. This is called Lifestyle Inflation. The nicer car becomes affordable, eating out becomes more regular, holidays get bigger and everyday choices gradually become more expensive.
Before long, the extra income has been absorbed, and the household can feel almost as stretched as before.
More income gives you greater capacity, but it won’t fix a broken money system, and financial progress actually comes from what you do with that capacity.
GIVE YOUR MONEY A CLEAR DIRECTION
A Spending Plan gives every dollar of your income a job before it disappears into everyday life. It helps you decide how much goes towards regular expenses, bills, savings, debt reduction, future goals and the things you enjoy.
A Spending Plan is my preferred term for a Budget because it reinforces that spending is okay. It is about being in control, knowing what is coming in, what is going out and what needs to be set aside.
A strong money system should also include emergency savings. Start with a goal of $1000 to get you going, then build towards three to six months of essential expenses. Your emergency savings help cover unexpected and regular costs without needing to replace your entire lifestyle.
WORK TOGETHER AND DEAL WITH DESTRUCTIVE DEBT
For couples, financial control improves when both understand where the household is heading. You do not need identical views about money, but you do need a shared understanding of priorities and longer-term goals.
A regular money conversation helps you stay connected. Talk about what is coming up, what you are working towards, where your money is going and whether your Spending Plan still reflects what matters to both of you.
Destructive debt needs attention. Credit cards, personal loans and buy-now-paylater commitments can act like an anchor, holding you back from progress. A pay rise can be an opportunity to reduce these balances faster instead of using the extra income to fund a more expensive lifestyle.
LET YOUR INCOME GROW WITHOUT LETTING EVERYTHING ELSE GROW WITH IT
It’s great to enjoy receiving a pay rise. If you have worked hard and increased your income, it is ok to enjoy some of the benefit.
The challenge is making sure every extra dollar does not permanently increase your lifestyle spending.
A boost in income can accelerate financial progress when it flows through a system that gives your money direction.
