She’s assessing risk as her educator stands close, hands down, and asks one question. “What’s your plan?”
Seedlings & Co is anchored in the principle of nurturing through nature.
Its providers are parents who themselves had to navigate a traditional schooling system asking children to sit still and learn indoors all day.
They knew they could not change schooling for their own children, but what they could change was everything that came before it.
This journey led to a team of educators joining a study tour to Finland in 2019, with a return to Denmark in 2025 to see what had held.
Not for a certificate, but to stand in forests and classrooms in the cold, watching educators who had spent decades taking children seriously. What came home was not a routine program but a philosophy.
It looks ordinary from the outside. Bush kindy and beach kindy, in weather that isn’t always convenient.
A carpentry bench with real hammers, real nails and safety glasses that fit, because the weight of a real tool teaches what a plastic one cannot.
Loose parts that scatter in the yard, that look like they have no purpose, but imagination and problem solving are in action.
Bush kindy is not a nature outing. It prepares a child for life, for judgement, for weather, for the moment when nobody is there to lift you up.
None of this survives on good intentions. It survives because the provider is small, invested in early education.
Six centres. Three people in management, and part of their week is spent on site, not reading numbers off a dashboard in another state, but in the room, coaching, mentoring, provoking a thought and building practise.
That is the difference an independent provider makes.
Local operators can change their minds and adapt curriculum approaches – they know the people across all their team, they hold a family’s place through a hard month because they know the family.
Now the child unties her rope, walks back along the log, and does it again.
Someone trusted her to make a plan, and built her skills along the way.
