A new event at Queensland Raceway is set to bring together elements of drag racing and roll racing, giving competitors a fresh challenge and fans another reason to head to the track.
At its heart is a no-prep format. Without the grip racers would expect from a prepared drag strip, getting down the track takes more than horsepower. Finding the right setup, managing traction and making the most of each run will all matter. Competitors will also receive time slips, giving them a clear measure of their progress as they work to go quicker.
That combination could be especially appealing to die-hard no-prep racers. The event gives them somewhere local to hone their craft, test changes and chase results in a championship setting.
It also offers newcomers a chance to see why no-prep racing is attracting attention: when grip is limited, even a powerful car has to earn a clean run.
The Queensland Raceway event joins a growing no-prep scene, with more tracks exploring the format and more racers looking for opportunities to compete. Bringing drag and roll racing influences together should add its own character to the championship.
It comes as Tony Quinn continues to invest in upgrades at Queensland Raceway, hinting at new million dollar upgrades of adding an extra bend or so to the famous paper clip, and with QPG Racing getting behind the new event, there is momentum both on and off the track.
For Queensland’s no-prep racers, a local championship with time slips and regular opportunities to improve could be exactly what the scene needs to keep growing.
