IT IS only two games.
Every basketball fan knows better than to start planning a championship parade after the opening week of an NBL season.
But after what Brisbane Bullets supporters like myself have endured in recent years, surely they can be forgiven for getting just a little excited.
Two games for two wins.
An historic night under the open sky at Pat Rafter Arena, a record-breaking import point guard, a monster performance from one of Australian basketball’s emerging stars and suddenly there is a bit of swagger about the Bullets again.
And it has been a long time coming.
Brisbane entered NBL27 carrying one of the competition’s longest finals droughts, having not played post-season basketball since 2019.
Since winning their most recent championship in 2007, the Bullets have reached the post-season only twice.
That’s why this 2-0 start feels significant.
Not because it guarantees anything, because it doesn’t.
But because for the first time in a while, there are genuine reasons to wonder whether these Bullets might be building something.
After years of false dawns, rebuilds and seasons that promised plenty before fading away, nobody should be getting carried away after two matches.
The Bullets themselves certainly won’t – but maybe, just maybe, Brisbane basketball is going to be fun again this year.
