Basketball players, families, volunteers and clubs across Ipswich will benefit from long-awaited upgrades to the Ipswich Basketball Stadium after the State Government approved a major expansion of the Booval facility.
The Queensland Government has granted a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation, allowing the project to proceed as a sporting facility of state significance under the Planning Act 2016.
The approval, signed by Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie on 13 November 2025, enables an extension to the existing stadium at 2A Ross Llewellyn Drive and 18 Macartney Street.
The expansion will allow two courts to be upgraded to full-size competition standards and improve spacing between courts, enhancing safety for players. The project will be delivered by the Ipswich Basketball Association Inc and designed to align with the existing scale and character of the site.
Once complete, the upgraded stadium will increase capacity for training, competitions and development programs across junior, senior and representative levels, supporting continued growth in basketball participation across the city.
The improved facility is also expected to strengthen Ipswich’s ability to host larger competitions and tournaments, attracting visiting teams, families and spectators and delivering flow-on economic and social benefits to the local community.
The designation is subject to strict conditions, particularly relating to flooding and stormwater management, as well as parking and access requirements, including a minimum of 43 on-site car parking spaces with at least one accessible space.
Public consultation on the proposal was undertaken last year, with the State Government noting Council support for expanding indoor sporting facilities in Ipswich and concluding the project represents an appropriate extension of the site’s existing use.
