FILM students at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) will now have a chance to learn from one of Australia’s most celebrated directors.

Ben Hackworth, whose films have been selected for the Cannes Film Festival, said a career in film took great challenges to reap great rewards.

“I look at my career and although I’ve gone head-first, I also wish I’d taken more creative risks,” Mr Hackworth said.

“To make daring cinema, you have to stand out from the pack, and so I am definitely working with less trepidation these days,” he said.

Mr Hackworth’s illustrious career spans further than France, with screenings of his work seen across the world and he has won over 15 international film awards.

It’s with that worldly adventurousness that Mr Hackworth said he couldn’t wait to teach budding film enthusiasts.

“If you have the passion at UniSQ, you can really do something incredible, because there is plenty of time and focus from the lecturers,” he said.

“I really want to instil the passion for cinema in these students, because it’s been that love of the industry that I have fallen back on time and time again.

“It’s these personal stories and creativity from students that drive me, and I hope that I can in turn inspire the next generation of Australian film directors.”

The Bachelor of Film and Screen Production is a new programme consisting of a 12 course Film major that will help develop professional skills in location film direction, producing, camera, sound, lighting, editing, digital composing, scriptwriting and research.
