IPSWICH seniors have a new place to find friendship, discover a hobby and enjoy some company, with a community hub at Booval Fair bringing older residents together through activities ranging from gentle exercise to ukulele lessons.

Delivered by Y Queensland, formerly YMCA Queensland, the Ipswich Thriving Seniors program aims to help older residents remain active and involved in their community.

The hub officially launched on Tuesday, October 6, with a free morning tea followed by Bingo and Rummy, giving participants a taste of the activities ahead.

Exercise classes, a weekly walking group, book club, jewellery making, craft and games are among the options on offer.

Alongside opportunities to learn something new, the program provides a regular reason to get out of the house and spend time with others.

Residents do not need to bring a friend or know anyone before attending.

The hub welcomes people coming along on their own, allowing friendships to develop through shared interests and regular catch-ups.

“Social connection is important at every stage of life, and sometimes all it takes is having somewhere welcoming to go and something enjoyable to be part of,” a Booval Fair spokesperson said.

The program is available to Ipswich residents aged 60 and over, or 50 and over for First Nations residents, with a focus on reducing social isolation and building meaningful community connections.

Its location at Booval Fair places activities close to shops and everyday services in a familiar setting.

Whether residents want to get moving, try something creative or simply enjoy a conversation, the hub offers an opportunity to make social connection part of their weekly routine.

“We’re delighted to provide a home for Ipswich Thriving Seniors and, most importantly, a space where local seniors can meet, laugh, learn something new and form genuine friendships,” the spokesperson said.

“Just come along and you’ll be made to feel welcome.”
