CAKE Is Great, affectionately known as Henry, is proving just how sweet success can be by continuing his strong form heading into Saturday night’s QGold Blitz Final over 390 metres at Q1 Lakeside.
Prepared by trainer Stephen Neary, the talented chaser started a $1.75 favourite in his heat but was narrowly edged out by rank outsider Classic Boodie ($34), going down by just 0.13 of a length in a thrilling finish.
Despite the defeat, the run was enough to secure his place in a high-quality final.
The decider shapes as a genuine test, with a field stacked with early speed and proven performers.
Among the key dangers is track specialist Hara’s Neo, boasting an outstanding nine wins and two placings from eleven starts at the Q1 Lakeside trip. Also looming large is the unbeaten Neame, trained by Tony Zammit, who has a perfect five-from-five record over the course and distance.
Bred from Flying Ricciardo and Cake Is Nice, Cake Is Great enters the final in excellent form, showcasing consistency in recent outings. He has recorded three wins and four second placings from his past seven starts, signalling a greyhound racing at the peak of his powers.
Across his career, Henry has compiled an impressive record of 58 starts for 19 wins and 18 placings, delivering a 33 per cent winning strike rate while edging closer to $50,000 in prizemoney.
He also hails from a strong litter that includes Blocker Tiger (80 starts: 18 wins, 18 seconds, 12 thirds), Cake is Yummy (57: 9-6-10) and Cake In Tummy (49: 11-4-2), underlining the depth of talent in the bloodline.
Looking beyond Saturday night, Neary said the chaser would step back up in distance following the final.
“He went 25.47 last time he ran the 457 and just got beat,” Neary said.
With form, pedigree and consistency on his side, Cake Is Great will be right in the mix.
