The Laidley Recreation Reserve’s main softball diamond now sports signage to reflect its new name – the ‘Col Lee Softball Diamond’.

Last year, Lockyer Valley Region Council sought the community’s input to name the facility, with Council receiving a total of 87 eligible submissions during its recent EOI process, with 77 nominating Mr Lee as the namesake.

The Laidley Recreation Committee hosted a barbecue to mark the event, with Col’s family and friends also on hand to mark the occasion.

Council’s CEO Ian Church said the new signage reflected Mr Lee’s long connection and service to the sport.

“Col has been an active member of the Lockyer Valley sporting community, with involvement in softball in Mulgowie and Laidley over many years.

“He played for, coached and was president of the Mulgowie Angels while also holding several positions within Ipswich Softball.

“He also worked on the formation of the Lockyer Softball Association and represented softball on the planning committee for the upgrade of the Laidley Recreation Reserve.

“Many of those who submitted EOIs nominations attributed their love for and involvement in the sport of softball to Mr Lee,” he said.

Mr Church said the softball diamond currently hosts social and school softball games and hopes the new signage would help young players recognise the great work of volunteers who have paved the way for them.
