IPSWICH Musical Theatre Company is preparing to stage the acclaimed musical Come From Away, featuring local performer Amy McCormick in the role of Janice Mosher.
Amy, a lifelong Ipswich resident, describes joining the production as a full-circle moment.
“My first musical experience was watching Ipswich Musical Theatre Company’s Oliver! when I was five. Now, to be on their stage in one of my favourite shows is incredible.”
With a message that is more relevant now than ever, the show tells the true story of 38 planes diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, following the 9/11 attacks, and the community’s extraordinary efforts to care for thousands of stranded passengers.
“Come From Away is about kindness, community, and compassion – even towards people you’ve never met. It’s a beautiful reminder of humanity in difficult times,” McCormick said.
Playing Janice, a young reporter on her first day on the job thrown into covering the tragic events as they unfold, the young performer said she was excited to be a part of the production.
“She’s fresh at her job and suddenly has to report on one of the most heartbreaking moments in recent history. It’s a challenging but rewarding role to play,” McCormick said. “We aim to be honest and respectful, showing the raw emotions without exaggeration or underplaying the gravity of what happened.”
As a proud Ipswich local, she praised the city’s theatre community.
“Ipswich theatre is vibrant and professional – it deserves more recognition. I’m thrilled to bring such a meaningful show to local audiences.”
She hopes Come From Away will inspire audiences.
“I hope people leave feeling connected, moved, and reminded that even in dark times, kindness and community prevail.”
Come From Away will be at the Ipswich Civic Centre, from September 13-21 – tickets available through Ipswich Musical Theatre Company.
