Dark Chocolate vs Milk Chocolate: Which Is Better?
SHARE

Have you a sweet tooth? Do you like chocolate? Dark or light? Which is better for you?

Most would say it’s dark chocolate that’s better for you. Today, in this column we are going to see just how the evidence stacks up.

All chocolate begins with the seeds of the “cacao tree”, a tropical plant native to Central and South America.

Processing of the beans gives you bitter parts, and together with cocoa butter, gives that smooth texture that we all like so much.

Chocolate is made from these two main parts, together with sugar and milk powder or condensed milk added for so-called white or light chocolate.

Dark chocolate contains much higher quantities of cocoa solids than the milk varieties, with a greater concentration of energy, protein and saturated fats. Dark is also higher in iron, magnesium and potassium, zinc and caffeine.

Milk chocolate has more sugars added but contains more calcium, due to the added milk.

Cocoa is naturally rich in “polyphenols”, which act as an antioxidant in the body helping to protect the body cells from damage.

Compared to other foods, experts say cocoa has more antioxidants than red wine and teas like black or green teas.
Dark chocolate is often thought of as bitter but there are many many varieties and levels of taste that one can try.

While, of course white can be too sweet at times.

Maybe now you’re thinking that dark chocolate may be actually better for you.

There are chocolates made all around the the world. Try the ones from Germany.

Theory is that one can have up to 60 grams a day, should you wish to indulge in a chocolate fix daily without harming your body, actually helping it to stay healthy.

Whatever your taste, have some chocolate every day. It will be good for you.
