DILLAN Walker is proud to have been acknowledged with a 2024 QATSIF Deadly Educator Award.

As a Cultural Teacher Aide at Bremer State High School, Mr Walker is instrumental in interweaving cultural programs into the school community.

His work extends far beyond his formal role, as he strives to create a sense of community and belonging for the school’s First Nations students.

His efforts have been instrumental in the growth of the First Nations dance troupe, as well as other initiatives including didgeridoo workshops, yarning circles, and sporting groups.

Mr Walker feels that through these initiatives, he can ensure students feel connected to their heritage and gain a deeper understanding of cultural practices, traditions, and protocols.

“We are proud to celebrate Dillan’s achievements and grateful for the positive influence he continues to have on our school community,” a school spokesperson said.

Bremer State High School runs a range of First Nations programs that set the benchmark in the area of interconnecting to cultural and community.

The programs include the Didge program which offers young boys a chance to immerse themselves in the world of traditional Aboriginal music. Through hands-on experience, students learn to carve and play the didgeridoo, connecting with rhythms and melodies passed down through generations.

The Tiddas Art Program celebrates the artistic expression of Indigenous girls. Guided by local elders, participants engage in various art forms, exploring their creativity and cultural identity. This program is a canvas for self-discovery and personal growth.

The school also has an Indigenous dance troupe that performs at local events from NAIDOC Week to Anzac Day, International Study Tour Visits to Harmony Day.

The award is presented by the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) and recognises Mr Walker’s ongoing commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their families, and his involvement in the programs at Bremer State High School.

QATSIF is dedicated to improving education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across Queensland by providing scholarships and supporting initiatives that enhance cultural understanding and pride.

The Deadly Educator Award recognises educators who go above and beyond to positively impact the lives of First Nations students.
