There has never been a more important time for us to stand together and celebrate our multicultural identity.
I am proud to represent many Australians of Indian and South Asian heritage, and from a range of faith backgrounds, in the electorate of Blair. I appreciate their contribution to our community and economy, and to our nation’s success.
This Diwali celebration is one of the cultural highlights of the year. It is the sheer vibrancy and colour of these events – along with the boundless enthusiasm of participants – that energises this community to contribute locally, and to inspire all of us to live a life of service.
With its celebration of the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance, it affirms the ideals that inspire Australians from all walks of life.
These ideals are important in a world of uncertainty, suffering and intolerance. They capture the shared values of people of faith across our nation.
This is what makes Diwali such a special time. We come together from various backgrounds and experiences to celebrate both our oneness and diversity, our harmony and goodwill.
Everyone belongs in Australia. It doesn’t matter where in the world you come from, what language you speak, or which religion you observe – you are always welcome.
May this Diwali be a wonderful celebration and bring you joy and peace.
