IT’S impossible to miss there’s an election soon with the extraordinary number of signs which mushroomed overnight after the Prime Minister made his early morning trip to Yarralumla.
All campaign teams were chomping at the bit to be first after a rain-delayed start owing to Cyclone Alfred.
Is there a change in sign tactics this Federal Election or do I have a short memory?
The number of signs from the same candidate at every major intersection, school, park and roundabout is over the top.
Why have one sign when six of the same in a row will do. Not all candidates are sprinkling them around like confetti, but the major parties are certainly in the lead.
It’s a given that traditional election signs strategically placed here and there is an important part of raising awareness of candidates and has been for decades.
With so many other avenues for promotion through newspapers, radio, billboards and online, this mass sign blitz is overkill.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen the usual defacing of signs with clever messages and the odd moustache. Give it time.
And we can expect to hear claims of signs being stolen in the dead of night.
As a side issue, it would make sense for federal parliament to move to fixed four-year terms. At least the sign army would get a longer rest between elections.
