THE South Ripley bushfire that tore through close to 300 hectares last week fortunately claimed no lives, but the scale of the blaze provided a stark reminder of the danger ahead as the region braces for what could be an intense fire season.
The fire pushed dangerously close to homes and tested crews on the ground, while also highlighting the thousands of firefighters and volunteers standing ready to protect communities across Ipswich and surrounding regions.
While many residents associate bushfire season with the hottest months of summer, Rural Fire Service Queensland Scenic Rim Area Manager Corey Bock said the greatest danger could arrive much earlier.
“Traditionally our fire season ramps up from now through October before summer storms start easing conditions,” Mr Bock said.
Conditions can vary significantly from year to year, depending on rainfall, vegetation growth and the broader climate, making preparation before fires break out critical.
Across the rapidly growing Ipswich corridor and neighbouring regions, the fire service is backed by an enormous volunteer network.
“Across Logan, Scenic Rim, Ipswich, Somerset and Lockyer, we’ve got roughly about three-and-a-half thousand volunteers,” Mr Bock said.
As housing and population growth continues to push communities closer to bushland, authorities say prevention and preparation are becoming increasingly important.
Mr Bock said poorly maintained properties could present a major risk during dry conditions, particularly on acreage where grass, vegetation and other fuel loads could allow fire to spread quickly.
Residents on larger properties are encouraged to establish firebreaks and divide their land into manageable sections, helping firefighters contain a blaze should one break out.
Firebreaks of about three to three-and-a-half metres wide can also provide vital vehicle access for firefighting and containment operations.
For residents whose properties back onto bushland, including around areas such as White Rock Conservation Area, Mr Bock said some of the most effective precautions were also among the simplest.
“One thing we really want people to stop doing is dumping lawn clippings or green waste over back fences into bushland,” he said.
“That actually builds up fuel loads that can burn and spread fire directly back onto fences and homes.”
Residents are also being urged to report smoke or suspected fires immediately rather than waiting to see if the situation develops.
“The quicker we can get crews there, the less chance a fire has to build heat, energy and momentum,” Mr Bock said.
For the thousands of volunteers who stand ready when those calls come, Mr Bock said the work remained enormously rewarding despite the danger and difficult conditions.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to bring some hope and support on someone’s darkest day,” he said.
