AUSTRALIA’S grandparents are taking centre stage in family holidays, with “grandcations” becoming the must-do getaway for families.

Recent research shows 51 per cent of Australians have taken – or are planning to take – a “skip-generation” holiday.

Sixty-four per cent want to create special memories, while 63 per cent are focused on strengthening bonds with their grandchildren.

Multi-generational travel is booming, with about a third of Australian families enjoying holidays across three generations or more, and 43 per cent planning a multi-generational trip within the next year.

Just an hour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the Scenic Rim is perfectly placed for these getaways.

From immersive farm stays to adventure playgrounds like Thunderbird Park, mountain walks to eco-certified nature experiences, grandparents and grandkids can enjoy safe, engaging, and memory-filled adventures together.

Grandparents Amber and Wayne Harrison moved from The Shire, NSW, to the Gold Coast 15 years ago.

They love bringing their grandchildren to Tamborine Mountain for staycays at Tamborine Mountain Glades, home to Thunderbird Park.

“Our family is very close-knit,” Amber said.

“We love making memories together, laughing, going to the beach and the mountains, eating out, and experiencing the beauty of the Hinterland.”

Tamborine Mountain Glades has just launched its Grandcation Package, offering accommodation for every style – from adventurous glamping to luxury in the Vista Suites, or a relaxed stay in a lodge, complete with a complimentary round of mini golf for the whole family.

Tamborine Mountain Glades founder Judi Minikin said: “Time spent with your grandchildren is more than a holiday; it’s a rare chance to fully connect, laugh, and explore together while creating memories that last a lifetime.”

Nearby, Clandulla Farm Stay is also seeing rising grandcation bookings.

Grandparents and grandchildren can bond over feeding animals, exploring paddocks, and enjoying fresh Scenic Rim air.

Clandulla Farm Stay’s Nambok Howard said:

“Every year, more grandparents turn babysitting duties into memorable experiences.

“Instead of sitting around the TV at nan and pop’s place, they’re making memories with our friendly animals and playing outdoors.

“Grandparents aren’t just receiving photos – they’re part of the adventure, laughing with their grandkids around a campfire.

“It’s a sign families want to reconnect – with each other and with the great outdoors. Farm life feels a world away, but it’s just a short drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and offers something for everyone – without long flights or jetlag.”

With scenic landscapes, engaging experiences, and adventures designed for all ages, the Scenic Rim is fast becoming Australia’s ultimate grandcation destination.
