THE Indian community in Ipswich and surrounding areas has warmly welcomed a major election commitment from the Federal Government to deliver $5.5 million towards a new House of India community and cultural centre in South East Queensland’s Western Corridor.
The announcement was made in Springfield, where Indian-born residents made up 9.6 per cent of the population at the 2021 Census.
The funding will support the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) in establishing a long-anticipated community hub that will cater not only to people of Indian heritage, but also serve multicultural and faith-based organisations across the region.
The proposed House of India will act as a meeting place and venue for cultural celebrations, community events, education programs, and support services.
Federal Member for Oxley Milton Dick, said the commitment was about turning a long-held vision into reality.
Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann praised the Indian community for its positive influence across Ipswich.
“The Indian diaspora makes a huge contribution to the economic and social fabric of Ipswich,” Mr Neumann said.
