THREE Ipswich apprentices have taken out major honours at this year’s TAFE Queensland SkillsTech CSQ Apprentice Awards held at Brisbane’s Royal International Convention Centre.

Fifteen outstanding Queensland apprentices were recognised across 15 trade categories, with Ipswich local Xanda Kerss named CSQ Outstanding Apprentice of the Year after earlier winning the Dulux Trade Painting and Decorating Apprentice of the Year award.

Now in its eighth year, the awards celebrate the achievements of high-performing apprentices from across the SkillsTech region, which trains more than 12,500 apprentices each year in trades ranging from building and construction to light automotive.

The top honour, Outstanding Apprentice of the Year, is selected from all category winners and recognises exceptional dedication, growth, and professional development.

Xanda, who completed his apprenticeship with McNab, said the recognition meant a great deal.

“Knowing my hard work and my dedication to my apprenticeship doesn’t go unnoticed is greatly appreciated,” he said.

“Before starting, I struggled with anxiety and depression and often felt unfulfilled in my work.

“Since beginning my painting apprenticeship, I’ve not only gained hands-on skills and technical expertise but also rebuilt my confidence and sense of purpose.”

McNab manager Brendan McGuifficke said Xanda had shown “a genuine commitment to his personal and professional growth, consistently performing at a high standard both onsite and in the classroom”.

Joining Xanda among Ipswich’s award winners were Kaden Morgan and Kirra-Lee Harvey-Barden.

Kaden, a Drake Trailers apprentice, received the Heavy Commercial Industries Apprentice of the Year award.

“Choosing a trade was more than just a career decision – it was about following a path that felt right for me,” he said.

“It’s a field that allows me to keep learning, stay challenged, and build a future doing work that I’m proud of.”

He also thanked those who supported his journey.

Kirra-Lee, a Programmed Skilled Workforce apprentice, was named Engineering and Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year.

“TAFE has really been a massive stepping stone for my learning,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing way to gain hands-on experience and one-on-one coaching to help me better understand my trade.”

The 2025 Apprentice Awards once again highlighted the bright future ahead of the next generation of Queensland tradespeople.
