IPSWICH’S vibrant arts community celebrated International Day of People with Disability last week with a special showcase honouring three local artists whose talent, resilience and determination continue to inspire.
Members of ArtsConnect – an inclusive creative network supporting artists of all abilities – joined forces to highlight the work of Debbie Chilton, Carissa McCartney and Jacob Hambleton.
ArtsConnect advocate and long-time member Debbie Chilton led the initiative, wanting to spotlight artists who live with disability but continue to build successful and fulfilling creative careers.
Debbie, along with Carissa and Jacob, curated a display that demonstrated not only their individual achievements but their shared message: to be seen for their abilities, not their disabilities.
Debbie is well known in the Ipswich arts scene as an author and visual artist who has participated in numerous exhibitions.
This year alone, she won two major awards – Works on Paper at the Boonah Arts Festival and the Print category at the Foothills Art Awards.
Her dedication and positive leadership have made her an influential figure for many emerging artists with disabilities.
“There are so many reasons to celebrate International Day of People with Disability – Australia this year!” Debbie said.
“The day is not about disability, rather a reflection on who we are, what has been achieved in the disability movement, what I have achieved personally, and what comes next.
“I look with pride at the growth in the Ipswich arts community, where we as deaf and disabled artists have entered mainstream galleries and performance stages. Ipswich arts and cultural events now include Auslan interpreters, and that representation matters.”
Carissa has also gained recognition in the region, earning a Highly Commended award at the Ipswich Art Awards and multiple wins at the Ipswich Show.
Jacob has established his own art business and already sold numerous works, building a strong following for his unique style.
Together, the three artists embody the spirit of International Day of People with Disability – demonstrating that creativity, excellence and contribution to community are not limited by circumstance.
ArtsConnect continues to champion artists of all backgrounds and abilities, and says it is proud to have Debbie, Carissa and Jacob as valued members of its creative family.
